Pedro Almodovar is widely considered one of the best directors of our time, his distinctive style mixing soap opera plots with high art. In this highly acclaimed film he focuses on two men - a nurse and a journalist - who are drawn to each other whilst caring for the women they love - a dancer and a bull fighter - who are both coma victims. The two men, linked by grief, develop a powerful bond. The film begins with a curtain opening on a ballet. Marco is so moved that he begins to cry. In the next seat Benigno watches him quietly, little knowing their paths would subsequently meet. Almodovar's films are renowned for delving into the weird and the unexpected with humour so interwoven that they can appear comedies .
