Guille-Alles Library tie-up

CinéGuernsey and Guilles Alles Library are working together to provide you with a different perspective on our films.
For all screenings by CinéGuernsey, the Guilles Alles Library will kindly be providing reading support - for the most part in the form of the novel on which the film is based. You'll now be able to read the book before (or after) you watch the film with us!
A display has been put up between the first and second floor, so if you're in Town go and have a look for some inspirational reading, perhaps relating to our next film, Pedro Almodovar's "Talk to her".
You'll find a list of available books on their website (www.library.gg) - and you can borrow films on DVD and video!
We are hoping to build our relationship with the Guilles Alles with different events - we'll keep you informed as things progress.

Screening of "Super size Me"

A super size screening for CinéGuernsey with two sessions and well neigh full attendance! The Board of Health acted as our sponsors encouraging quite a number of health professionals to come and see the publicity stunt staged by Morgan Spurlock to draw attention to the rising danger of fast food and LARGE portions. There was a chance to discuss the film and its implications over a cup of coffee after. A very fast paced and lively documentary with a few truly gross moments!
We inaugurated the new DVD player purchased by the museum giving much better definition and far less unwanted surprises.

The yet not properly named film society chose the funny and endearing French language animation Belleville Rendezvous" as its premiere showing which we felt would appeal to a wide spectrum. It reassuringly played to a full audience of chuckling spectators. One participant even offered to bring his own chair if all seats had been sold!

CinéGuernsey wins big at BFFS "oscars"

CinéGuernsey swept the boards at the recent annual British Federation of Film Societies, BFFS, national Film Society of the Year Awards ceremony.

Held at the British Film Institute at London's South Bank, BFFS welcomed acclaimed director Nic Roeg (Performance, 1970, Don't Look Now 1973, Puffball, 2007) to present these prestigious awards.

Nic Roeg said "I am very pleased to have been invited to present these Awards. Film societies play a crucial role in bringing new, and not so new, cinema gems from around the world to appreciative audiences across the UK. Their contribution should not be overlooked and this is a great opportunity to applaud their hard work".

Each year BFFS rewards excellence in the vital work that film societies do in cultural and community cinema. The Film Society of Year Awards are vitally important in achieving recognition for the often unsung work of an army of dedicated film devotees, all of whom work for their film societies entirely voluntarily to bring high-quality cinema to their local communities throughout the country.

Out of the 8 top awards, entered by over 100 film societies across the UK CinéGuernsey won 3: the Best Marketing and Publicity Award, the Community Award and The Engholm Prize for Film Society of the Year for the overall most vigorous and dynamic film society demonstrating all qualities required of the individual categories for its matchless customer service and creativity.

Catriona Stares (Chairperson in 2005 & 2006) said "CinéGuernsey are thrilled to accept these 3 awards and we will keep on going from strength to strength, bringing the people of Guernsey the best in alternative cinema."

Screening of "Taxi"

A very popular screening of a modern French cult classic. Daniel, a dangerous speed freak is set loose as a taxi driver. Somehow, in spite of his criminally dangerous driving, he ends up working for the police as the side-kick of an ineffectual officer hunting a German gang... Scored high on our survey - a big hit with the lads.

Screening of "Girl with a Pearl Earring"

The newly founded CinéGuernsey started its 1st season with the visually striking, "Girl with a Pearl Earring", a big hit on the mainland that never reached these shores. and in fact nearly didn't- the hired DVD arriving rather close for comfort! To set the scene Eric Snell, subsequently Guernsey's Ambassador of the Year, gave a short talk on Vermeer and what it was like to be an artist at the time.
Autumn 2004

The fortuitous meeting of two cinema enthusiasts, Jenny Cherry and Catriona Stares driven to distraction by a diet of Hollywood Blockbusters led within a matter of weeks to a mushrooming group of like-minded people - all intent on seeing whether there was enough interest in Guernsey to make a Film Society viable. The British Federation of Film Societies was contacted, a trial showing was planned, a venue decided upon and a simple idea became reality.
